Appeal and Best of the Abode Giveaway Update 8/26/16

Appeal and Best of the Abode Giveaway Update 8/26/16

Dearest friends of the Abode:

While the summer may be drawing to a close, the activity and energy at the Abode continues to heat up!  Our productive summer is transitioning into a wonderful fall series of events and initiatives.

Many of you learned first-hand about what’s been happening at the Abode during our first multimedia Town Hall on August 9.  We had many friends join us on campus and even more online and by phone.  It was an evening of shared information, positive energy and a strengthened sense of unity and purpose.  The Board and I are grateful for your wholehearted presence.

At the Town Hall, we outlined the progress the Abode has made during this year of transition to independent operation and governance, as well as our strategy for renewing the Abode and ensuring a sustainable and vibrant future.  For those who could not join us live, we have recorded the event which can be accessed by following this link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rq6ROiK7y5I

As it has been since its start in 1975, the active participation, ongoing input and generous financial support of the entire community are critical to fulfilling the vision of Pir Vilayat and the founders of the Abode as a place of peace, beauty and spirituality for Sufis and seekers. The Abode is by no means past its transition phase, but we are making continued, steady progress.  Growth means more opportunity and an expanding circle of renewal: what is called a virtuous cycle.  Some examples include:

  • We are upgrading our technology and tools and recently made investments in new online fundraising management (Donor Perfect) and room reservation (Retreat Guru) systems which will help us organize programs, register participants, take payments, and ensure a well-rounded, fully-integrated system of support for everyone contributing donations or staying at the Abode.

  • Our goal is to draw more visitors to the Abode through expanding the variety of events, programs and partnerships we produce and / or host and we been active in expanding our events at the Abode that extend our Message and build our community.  In fact, there are only two weekends through Thanksgiving that are without program activity!   Please see our calendar for our full schedule of events, which includes next weekend’s Silent Retreat with Pir Zia, as well as upcoming Suluk Academy session and Ruhaniat Jamiat Khas and Board Meeting.

  • In September, we will be welcoming Netanel Miles-Yepez as our inaugural Teacher-in-Residence at the Abode.  Netanel is the successor of the Reb Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and current head of the Inayati-Maimuni lineage of Sufism.  Netanel will be with us through November and will be teaching classes and providing individual spiritual guidance to the Abode community and others interested in the Sufi path.  We know he will provide an energetic spiritual presence during his stay with us. For further information about Netanal, please visit www.inayati-maimunis.org/

  • In early October, we will be hosting our first annual “Abode Weekend” to coincide with our Annual General Meeting and which will include a story-telling seminar, special musical performances, Native and Shaker history lectures, fall foliage tours, and more.  Mark your calendars and reserve your rooms for October 6-10 (using the aforementioned RetreatGuru software.) More details will follow in early September.  Be sure to check theabode.org for updates.

The winner of last week’s giveaway — a free guided retreat on the Mountain or in the Meditation Hall — is John Tranchese.  Congratulations!

This week’s Best of the Abode giveaway is a complementary accommodation for our planned New Year’s Eve Retreat for up to two people.  (Contribute $33 or more to the Abode Summer Appeal this week and you’ll be entered in a drawing for the giveaway.  We’re also giving away CDs of Abodian music by Dakini Marcy Telles to the first 5 donations over $100.)
