Much has happened to the Abode infrastructure in 2011: A new septic system, a new roof for Alim and a new kitchen on the mountain. Now winter has settled in and we are planning 2012. The Abode is contemplating many fresh ideas and plans. The Main Campus is expanding its guest capacity with a new small retreat conference room and more rooms for guests. We are also looking at making our Shaker buildings more accessible to people with disabilities and more comfortable.
The Mountain Retreat Center is also moving on with its makeover. A new tent on a re-done platform, new roofs and repairs on Cabins A and B, finishing the kitchen addition and making the center a more wheelchair accessible facility! We are working on two fronts to make this happen: Raising the seed money for construction and gathering a team of volunteers to start working as soon as the snow melts.
The Abode is actively looking for motivated volunteers to help us create these changes. Women, we want you on our crew! If you are physically fit, skilled or un-skilled but willing to work, there is a place for you here, male or female. Construction and repairs will be going from April 1st to October 1st with our main push being from April 1st to the end of June before the Sacred Arts Mountain Retreat. Volunteers should be dedicated and skilled, or motivated to learn construction basics. Men and women would be working 30 hours a week with a crew leader in exchange for room/board at the Abode and free attendance to weekly spiritual classes, Dances of Universal Peace and many vibrant and empowering retreats and programs during their free time. Volunteering your physical labor for a month or more to create these new and renovated spaces at The Abode is a way to become part of the fabric of our community this coming spring and summer. The Abode is alive and a good place to be if you want to experience a new pace of life.
If you wish to apply as a volunteer, go to our website at: http://www.theabode.org/community/volunteering/volunteer_application/. When filling out the application, please mention that you are interested in being a mountain crew volunteer. If you have questions about our volunteer (Hands to Work) program, contact Wahida Young at: Wyoung@theabode.net.
We are also actively interviewing for a Construction Crew Leader for the Mountain Center who is highly motivated, efficient, and who also has the ability to lead a mixed skill group of volunteers from April 1st to October 1st. Apply through the volunteer program (Hands to Work) following the link above.
