A Winter Meditation by Fazilee Buechel
Winter approaches cautiously this year, touching us with cold fingertips, then retreating with the advance of the sun. It is a sweet game of hide-and-seek. The solitude of winter allows us to play this game of hide-and-seek with the Beloved within.
Winter at the Abode is a quiet meditation with the slender branches of the pine trees as they commune with the air, a walking meditation with the crackle of ice under one’s feet as one breathes with each step, and a lesson in presence as the ice slides off the roofs of our buildings, crashing thunderously to the Earth.
Winter takes us close to the Earth like a mother drawing a child to her bosom, beseeching us to hear her heartbeat.
Winter plays a gentle ‘hu’ in our inner ears and in the outer ‘hu’ of the wailing wind, drawing us to listen even more deeply within, to hear the tiniest of voices within us, when the air and the rustling leaves quiet down enough so that we hear a silence full with the sound of hu. Bourne out of that silence are the seeds of our strongest desires, if only we are silent enough to hear the sound of truth resonating within.
