Chapman Stick Workshop

Greg Howard will teach a performance-oriented Chapman Stick weekend workshop at the Abode of the Message in New Lebanon, New York, Friday-Sunday December 9-11.  Participants will learn and perform several pieces in Stick ensemble settings, ranging from duos and trios to the entire group.  There will be material suitable for players of all skill levels, even complete beginners.

The workshop will culminate in a concert featuring Greg and the workshop participants on Sunday, December 11 at 7:00 pm.  Special guest Stickists Michael Bernier and Brett Bottomley with join the workshop on Sunday and perform at the concert on Sunday Night.

 

The Chapman Stick is a two-handed tapping instrument, invented and built by American musician Emmett Chapman. He discovered his Free Hands method of playing amplified strings just by tapping on them with the fingers in 1969. Since then he has made over 6000 instruments, and they are used by musicians in every genre of music.

 

Greg is one of the most experienced Free Hands method teachers, having given over 50 seminars and workshops all over North America, Europe and Japan. His two method books, "The Stick Book Volume 1" and "The Greg Howard Songbook" have guided hundreds of players on their own path of musical discovery.  The workshop will work and live as an ensemble, with each member bringing their own musical influences and even compositional ideas.

 

Cost for the workshop will be $315/student which includes room board and tuition. Meals are fresh, organic and vegetarian. Friday and Saturday night lodging (shared  accommodation) is included. Additional nights' lodging and single room accommodations are available at an additional charge. Additional accommodations are also available for non-student guests at an additional rate.

 

Space is limited to ten students, so sign up early to reserve your spot.
