Introduction to Sufism By Pir Zia Inayat Khan
We go forward in life, and for a time life seems a more or less random sequence of incidents and encounters. But gradually one begins to discern the traces of a larger pattern, the glimmerings of a presence that links up the most disconnected aspects of our experience. With the subtle fibers of one’s inner being one begins to hear a voice that speaks through silence. A fluttering of the breeze, a stirring in the depth of the heart, a twinkling in the eye of the person whom one meets—all of these sensations reveal the lineaments of a pattern. And that pattern is the image of the Beloved. One begins to recognize beauty as the sign.
When one reaches the recognition that one’s relationship with the Real takes precedence over everything else, everything changes. Instead of viewing one’s life circumstances as a concatenation of unrelated incidents, one recognizes life as a continuous journey. We have come from a source that we cannot remember and we are moving toward a destination that we cannot yet perceive. The future is veiled; step by step, moment by moment, we are flying into the unknown. For one who is consciously in search of the Real, the journey is an odyssey of discovery.
