Abode Farm
The Abode is home to Abode Farm CSA, a cooperatively run organic and biodynamic farm which produces vegetables, herbs, and flowers for our summer and winter CSA, local businesses, wholesale, schools, and farmers markets.
About the Farm
The farm sits on 14 acres of beautiful land at Mount Lebanon. This historic site was sacred to the native Mohicans, and later the Shakers, both of whom continue to inspire the farmers today. The farm has been active for over 50 years, grows vegetables on 7 acres, feeding a large local CSA, and works with the Abode kitchen to create farm-to-table meal plans for the community and retreat center.
Holistic agriculture
Abode Farm CSA strives to produce nourishing, high quality, and delicious vegetables all season long. To accomplish this goal the farmers use organic and biodynamic methods to preserve and build the health of our soils and ecology. This soil-based system focuses on diversity, cover cropping, composts, minerals amendments, and careful crop rotation. We do not use any synthetic fertilizers, herbicides, or pesticides on our farm. We rely on our Belgian draft horses as our primary source of power on our farm, which helps us stay light on the land, and sensitive to the biological rhythms we work with.
Farm-to-Community
In order to maintain a steady supply of delicious farm-fresh vegetables year-round, The Abode of the Message purchases Summer and Winter CSA shares in bulk from Abode Farm CSA, providing a majority of the kitchen’s produce throughout the growing season.
