An Evening With Lisa Sokolov

Acclaimed New York-based vocalist, composer, and cantorial student Lisa Sokolov presents a solo concert of original improvised and composed music for voice and piano. This event offers an intimate glimpse into Sokolov’s unique integration of jazz, experimental, and liturgical music, with a special focus on weaving Jewish religious song into contemporary musical performance. The beautiful, resonant sanctuary at The Abode is the perfect venue to enjoy this special musical offering.

As a frontline New York jazz vocalist, improviser and composer, Sokolov’s has received great acclaim, including Best CD of the Year (“Presence”) and “Best of the Decade” by Downbeat Magazine. She has performed on many world stages, including Montreaux Jazz Festival, Opera House of Lyons, the Spoleto Festival, The Vision Festival, Havana International Jazz Festival, Alice Tully Hall, and Symphony Space. Her recordings have received wide acclaim. Her book Embodied VoiceWork: Beyond Singing was released by Barcelona Publishers in 2020. Her work as a lay cantor has been featured in a CBS Special, “Sacred Art; Ancient Voices.” Her recent work has focused on integrating Jewish religious song into contemporary musical performance, including an acclaimed rendition of the liturgical, sacred prayer “Kol Nidre” on her newly released CD “A Quiet Thing.”

“Sokolov delves into the magical possibilities of the voice and the beauty and mystery of words…her progression towards the majestic and ecstatic "silence" of the universe. She is a musical adventurer…a master of breath and sound control…stunning…powerful…breathtaking." - Donald Elfman, All About Jazz Best of 2009
