Kirtan - With Ishwari and Friends - Followed by Potluck
Kirtan is a form of devotional music rooted in the Bhakti tradition of India. It involves call-and-response chanting, where mantras, names of the Divine, or sacred verses are sung in community. Often accompanied by harmonium, drums, and other traditional instruments, Kirtan creates a shared space for heart-centered connection, spiritual upliftment, and inner stillness. Whether you're singing or simply listening, the vibrations of Kirtan can help quiet the mind and open the heart.
Ishwari began her musical journey in the 1978 punk scene in Austin, TX, and later explored opera, dance, and world music in NYC. She discovered kirtan in 2000 and sang with Sruti Ram in SRI Kirtan from 2004–2016, performing at Bhaktifest, Omega, Kripalu, and beyond. Their album Live Your Love reached Billboard’s World Music Chart. A longtime bhakti yoga practitioner, she studied with Shyamdas for a decade and was initiated into the Pushtimarg tradition by her guru, Babashri Milan Goswami, in 2013. She also founded Vintage India NYC in 2014.
